Hysteric Troches

Take of Asa Foetida (Ferula – dried latex/gum) and Galbanum (Ferula gummosa – aromatic gum resin) each 2 drams and half; Myrrh (Commiphora myrrh – resin), 2 drams; Castor (ricinus communis), a dram and half; Birthwort Root (Aristolochia clematitis), 2 drams; the Tops of Savin (Juniperus sabina), 3 drams; Saffron (Crocus sativus), half a dram. Dissolve the Gums in the Juice or Decoction of Rue (Ruta graveolens), then strain them, and boil them up to the Consistence of Honey. Afterwards add the other Ingredients in fine Powder, and make the whole into TROCHES, according to the Rules of the Art (see apart instructions).

Remarks

  1. The Root of Asarabacca (Asarum europaeum), and the Leaves of Feverfew (Tanecetum parthanium) and Catmint (Nepeta cataria), are here rejected as superfluous.
  2. Instead of the Cretan Dittany (Origanum dictamnus) I have put Saffron.
